3 Tips on How to Work From Home

Whether you suddenly find yourself working from home for the forseeable future or have already been doing it now and then, here are 3 important things that you should keep in mind to help you be more successful.

1.) Structure and prioritize – if you had a certain routine that you followed  and were used to when you were in the office, you should try to stick to it when you work from home as well.  This way you can maintain your productivity levels. For example, keep an up to date calendar, set your work hours and stick to them, and plan your tasks for each day ahead of time. You should also find your ideal working spot whether you live in a tiny apartment or a big house with a dedicated office. Try to make sure you have enough natural light if possible and it should also be kept neat, clean, and organized away from distractions.

2.) Learn to communicate effectively – collaborating online requires better communication skills because there is no face to face contact. While there are many online collaboration tools to help, it starts with the simple basics. Speak/write clearly and concisely. Have an agenda for meetings, make sure there are no other distractions for video or phone calls.  

3.) Don’t skip lunch and breaks and log off at the end of the day. Treat your home office like your work office. That is take your lunch break and coffee break and try not to work while you’re eating. Most of us tend to think that because we are home that we don’t need to take breaks and that’s just not true. You’ll be more efficient, alert, and productive when you give yourself a chance to rest.

If you’ve never worked from home before it may take a little time to adjust. But you should resist the urge to put in extra hours because your office is right in front of you. Be responsible but take care of yourself and follow these tips and there’s a good chance you will find that you are more productive working from home then you were at the office.
